No hit single, nothing to sell to radio to compete with Alanis Morrissette, so they'd put out their album, and the label would duck, run, and terminate the contract. Revelater's definitely a prime example of this. Signed by Terry Tolkin to Elektra in a signing spree of some of his favorite bands (his other signings include Stereolab, The Afghan Whigs, and Luna), North Carolina's own Jennyanykind worked in the big studio with superproducer Dave Fridmann, who put his normal psychedelic tendencies (see Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips) aside to craft a raw, woozy album steeped in the tradition of late '60s and early '70s roots rock. Fridmann achieved a distant-mic'd sound with lots of room ambiance that captures the honesty of musicians playing a jam session in a basement room; the band's songwriting evokes roots rock champions like Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead with nods to The Velvet Underground and more contemporary work like that of Pixies and Silver Jews. The songs are strong, but I can hear the puzzled A&R men at Elektra listening to this and asking where the single is, what the radio would play from this after that Alanis song.
